Curriculum
GRACE After School utilizes a blend of two educational models to connect uniquely and specifically with the needs and cultures of our students. The Expeditionary Learning Model is associated with outdoor education, environmental education and experiential education, and it refers to any learning that is rooted in exploration. A learning expedition usually involves elements of challenge, adventure, and leadership. It can take place in a variety of settings, including the wilderness, a classroom, or even on the internet. Enrichment units at GRACE After School are typically structured around a learning expedition and often include self-directed research, opportunities for students to apply their knowledge to the real world as well as projects and products that benefit the community.
The Responsive Classroom Model of Education is a general approach to teaching based on the premise that students are most successful when they are equipped with both academic and socio-emotional skills. It is based on a network of theories and ideas from leading educators, teachers and child development experts. Responsive Classroom is applied every day at GRACE After School during the Circle of Power and Respect, which is a warm-up activity where students greet one another, take turns sharing opinions or experiences, and participate in a team-building activity. Students are taught to take responsibility for their own educational success and learning environment by working together to create community expectations. Consequences for misbehavior are logical and timely. Guided discovery is another central element to Responsive Classroom, and is based on the introduction of classroom materials in a format that encourages independence, creativity and responsibility.
